ARCH1201--Project 3--Model

ARCH1201--Project 3--Drawings

My site is Site 1, according to the outline, our building should be no more than 30 metres deep, so I only use half of site 1. The other half at back which connects to the carpark nearby will be a large open space, so people can see and come to the gallery directly from the carpark.

In my design, I have serveral small galleries to display the sculptures and two main galleries display paintings either large or small. The main source of light in the gallery is the skylight and some narrow windows on the wall. In the facade, there will be two large openings to let people on King Street know this is a gallery, and people standing in the gallery can also get a street view underneath.

The galleries either large or small are not all on the same level, so that people can walk and experience the artworks and the space with enough room and interesting level changes.

ARCH1201--Project 3--Sculptures

In my gallery, I want to display various artworks like sculptures and paintings from different artists. The picitures above show the sculptures from Robert Klippel will be displayed in my gallery. These sculptures are consisted with various parts, these parts connect to each other with different shapes or volumes which can be applied in my design as different volumes of galleries with various levels.

ARCH1201--Project 3--Precedent Study

My precedent study is the Yale Centre for British Art designed by Louis Kahn. From the photos above, we can see the main light source of the gallery is from the skylight, and there is a high window beside the paintings to access natural light on the paintings to make them show more arsthetic aspect.

ARCH1201--Project 3--Site

I chose Site 1 which is a long and thin site. It is 80 metres long and 12 metres wide. The two buildings beside the site are both 8 metres high.

ARCH1201--Project 2--Model

ARCH1201--Project 2--Drawings

Narrative: a man sits in his home office waiting a letter from his wife. This is the plan of office in the building, it has a big glazing opening to view the mail box which will receive the letter from his wife, and can also access natural light from outside. And the stairs beside the office has 3 long openings as well, this can let the man to see the mail box during his movement in his home office. This is the plan of the living room which is up stairs of the office. There is only a low and long window to access light in the living room, but by sitting beside the window, the man can still see the mail box.

ARCH1201--Project 2--Painting & Narrative

My painting is Office in a Small City by Edward Hopper in 1953.

My understand of this painting: the man sits in his office looking outside the city which shows he is lonely and isolated from the city. But the color of this painting is warm, which makes me think he is doing something warm by himself. And there are some roof and upper parts of other buildings outside his office, in my opnion this shows he is alone but he still wants to get out and some more social communications.

My narrative is: a man sits in his home office waiting a letter from his wife.

And my site is a quiet suburban town, like below.

ARCH1201--Project 1--Final--Model

By making this model, the organisation of the interior space becomes more clearly. When I drew the parti diagrams, I found out the stairs are the main point of this villa, and I understand how it works inside the villa and how the rooms are organised by making the model.

ARCH1201--Project 1--Final--Parti and Poche Drawings

PARTI
The stairs are the main part of the villa, all the rooms and spaces are divided with the level changes. In my parti drawings, the hatching on each diagram shows the stairs which is my main concerns about this villa; and different line weights indicate different rooms, the darkest lines show the room which is commonly used.

POCHE

The plan shows the upper level of the mail hall level which contains main hall, dining room, kitchen, boudoir and library on it. This level has level changes between each rooms which can use the space inside functionally. The section can show the level change inside the villa clearly by the stairs and floor slabs.

ARCH1201--Project 1--Final--Villa Muller

The Müller Villa is one of the most authentic and most completely preserved of Adolf Loos' works, not only in its residential and representative spaces but also in its private spaces, such as the bathroom, lavatory, kitchen and bedrooms. The service areas of the house also survive: the laundry room, cellars, boiler room, garage etc. (http://www.mullerovavila.cz/english/pruvod-e.html)

The facedes are showing as:

Inside, the Villa Muller is at once more traditional and more original. The materials are warm, rich and comforting, and the furniture a deliberately eclectic mix of traditional styles. The client is not required to conform to some all-consuming modern lifestyle. On the other hand the spatial planning of the building is where Loos was most innovative. (http://www.galinsky.com/buildings/villamueller/index.htm)

As Adolf Loos own viewon the Rumplan of the villa:

My architecture is not conceived by drawings, but by spaces. I do not draw plans, facades or sections... For me, the ground floor, first floor do not exist... There are only interconnected continual spaces, rooms, halls, terraces... Each space needs a different height... These spaces are connected so that ascent and descent are not only unnoticeable, but at the same time functional.

The complex and rich interior allows masters and servants enter the villa seperately with respection. And there are a few level changes inside the villa to make the space be more functional and seperately used. The pictures followed make a sense of how the space is organised:
